James Edward Nelson was born in Belfast on 16 September 1921. A qualified accountant, he played his senior rugby for the Malone club and won the first of 16 caps for Ireland at lock against Australia in 1947. In 1950 he was a member of the British Isles squad that toured Australasia, playing in 19 games, including four test matches. His nine games for the Barbarians included the captaincy against South Sfrica in 1952 and also against Cardiff the year before. He later served on the Barbarians' committee from 1963 to 1967. He was president of the IRFU in 1982.
