Clive Ronald Woodward was born in Ely, Cambridgeshire, on 6 January 1956 and educated at HMS Conway in Anglesey and Loughborough Colleges. Between 1979 and 1985 he scored 195 points, including 43 tries, in 148 games for Leicester Tigers. He also played club rugby for Harlequins and Manly in Australia. He played at centre in 21 internationals for England between 1980 and 1984, scoring four tries, and twice toured with the British Isles - to South Africa in 1980 where he scored 53 points in 11 appearances, including two tests, and New Zealand in 1983 where he played in seven matches. Clive Woodward was a member of the Barbarians' squad that won the Hong Kong Sevens in 1981. He became coach of England in 1997 and in 2003 was in charge when they won the Rugby World Cup in Australia. He was subsequently knighted. After standing down as national coach in 2004 he had a short period with Southampton FC before his appointment as Elite Performance Director with the British Olympic Association.
