Peter John Wheeler was born in London on 26 November 1948 and educated at Brockley County School. He played 350 times for Leicester at hooker and captained the club to cup final success. After initially pursuing a career as an insurance broker, Peter Wheeler became chief executive of Leicester in 1996. Between 1975 and 1984 he gained 41 caps for England and captained his country five times in the 1983/84 season. He toured with the British Isles to New Zealand in 1977 and South Africa in 1980, making 24 appearances, including seven tests. In 1974 he scored a hat-trick of tries on his Barbarian debut against East Midlands and went on to play 17 times for the Club. In 1976 he captained the side against Saskatchewan at Regina on the tour of Canada and in 1981 was a member of the squad that won the Hong Kong Sevens at the first attempt.
