Rory Underwood was born in Middlesborough on 19 June 1963 and educated at Barnard Castle School and RAF Cranwell where he trained as a pilot. A serving officer in the RAF he later established a career as a management consultant. One of the fastest wings of his generation, he scored 134 tries in 236 games for Leicester and a record 49 tries in 85 games for England between 1984 and 1996. He also played in the first three Rugby World Cup tournaments. He twice toured with the British Isles - to Australia in 1989 and New Zealand in 1993 - and made a total of 15 appearances, including six tests, and scoring 10 tries. In 1989 Rory and his brother Tony Underwood [q.v.] played in the same Barbarians XV against New Zealand at Twickenham.
