Richard Anthony Hill was born in Dormansland on 23 May 1973 and educated at Bishop Wordsworth's School and West London Institute. He played in the back row for Saracens for 11 seasons. Between 1997 and 2008 he scored 12 tries in 71 internationals for England. In three tours with the British Isles to South Africa (1997), Australia (2001) and New Zealand (2005) he played in 13 matches, including five tests.
