William Henry Hare, known as Dusty, was born in Newark on 29 November 1952 and educated at Magnus Grammar School. He was a farmer and played at full-back for Nottingham from 1971 to 1976 and then for 14 seasons for Leicester. He set a new world record in first-class rugby of 7337 points in his career. He played for a succession of Midlands XVs against incoming touring teams including the victories over Australia (1975), Argentina (1976), Fiji (1982) and New Zealand (1983). Between 1974 and 1984 he scored 240 points in 25 internationals for England. In 1983 he toured New Zealand with the British Isles and scored 83 points in six appearances, including 24 points in one match against West Coast. Dusty Hare captained the Barbarians against East Midlands in 1989 and served on the Committee from 1990 to 1992.
